Raised in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania by two music professors, Allison from an early age was introduced to music. Hearing her father practicing Chopin, Debussy or Gershwin on the family’s Steinway piano or watching her mother conduct Handel’s Messiah or Hadyn’s Creation, Allison knew music was going to be an important part of her life. Allison studied ballet at the Pennyslvania Ballet, played the violin and was involved in choirs and musicals all through her formative years.

The Boston Conservatory

After gradating high school, she entered Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and continued singing in the Spelman College Glee Club and involved herself in various theatre productions at her college. Receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and minor in Drama, Ms. Blackwell turned her attention away from performing and decided to attend law school to be an entertainment lawyer. She moved to DC and started working for Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio). She learned the ends and outs of law as a congressional aide for over a year. This allowed Ms. Blackwell to realize that her heart belonged to the stage. She applied and was accepted to The Boston Conservatory where she received her Masters of Music in Performance. Shortly after graduating, she moved to NYC and was on her way.

Allison Blackwell has been able to distinguish herself as a force of nature in the theatre and concert world with her versatile voice and outgoing personality. Making her Broadway debut in the 2012 Tony Award winning and Grammy nominated revival of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, she has been seen in such Broadway shows as The Lion King, Pretty Woman: The Musical and A Night With Janis Joplin. Her regional theatre work includes lead roles at The Marriott Theatre (Chicago), Paper Mill Playhouse, Sacramento Music Circus, Dallas Theatre Center, North Shore Music Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, Barrington Stage Company and Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. She received a San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Dotty/Washing Machine in Caroline, or Change (TheatreWorks, CA). Her guest artist concert work has allowed her to perform alongside such orchestras as The Boston Pops, The Philly Pops, Atlanta Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Houston Symphony and The New York Pops. Ms. Blackwell has been seen on television in such shows as The Today Show, The View, 66th Annual Tony Awards and two Live at Lincoln Center Productions; Show Boat and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2014 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Program).
